Fix Yer Guitar Tutorials - Adjusting the Electric Guitar Pickups

What you'll need for this session:

Screwdriver for height adjustment

Does your guitar make tones that you really didn’t ask for? Dual “out of tune” tones? Mushy tones? Weak outputs? Hmmm… sounds like your pickups need to be at the right height. Not to worry, in most cases, we can fix that.

First off a quick “how duz it work” explanation. Most Electric guitar pickups are nothing more than a magnet with very thin lacquer coated copper wire wrapped thousands of times around it. The two ends of the coil go to a potentiometer with lets more or less voltage pass through. The magnet which has a field of electrons “floating around it in a field, they get “excited” when the steel string is plucked, going back and forth, and the electrons move through the coil of wire at a certain speed (frequency!). After they go past the potentiometer, and to the amplifier, the frequency of the electrons, the voltage, creates the sound. Your high school science teacher helped you to become a rock and roller! Depending on the location of the string to the pickup, is your sound.

Weak output or mushy sound. Most of the time this means the pickup is just plain too low. Using your screwdriver, tighten the screws located next to outside edge of your pickup. If you have two screws on one side, adjust each one accordingly so that the pickup is parallel to the strings. Rule of thumb is about ¼ “ from the strings.

Dual “out of tune” tones. Jimi Hendrix used this quite a bit. This was the sound on his strat with stock single coil pickups because the pickup was too high and created a false harmonic so to speak. Almost like having the string pressed down at the pickup. Again it has to do with the physics of how a pickup works. The magnetic field creates this false note. Instead it adds the extra tone… usually not in tune with the plucked note. Don’t get me wrong, Jimi did great no bones about it. However, that may not be the sound you are looking for. So, lower the pickup or pickups on your instrument until it doesn’t have that sound. One note to strat players, in order to get the right pickup height, you may need to adjust the neck angle using a thin shim under the end of the neck in the cavity. If you aren’t well versed in how this is done, talk to your repairman. We do talk about this in our classes that we teach.

Anyway, this should help on the tone of your guitar.

Linux Commands Tutorials - Using the ls Command with Examples of Options - A Hands-On Tutorial Help

This Linux command tutorial shows you several examples of how to run the Linux ls command using popular, commonly used command options.

All of the Linux command examples shown below have been designed to work with all Linux distributions (versions).

The Linux ls Command

The Linux ls (list) command is a very popular Linux command that is used to show a listing of directories and files.

Linux ls Command Tutorial - Showing Examples of Using ls Command Options

Run the cd (change directory) command below to change into the etc directory (folder) so we have lots of directories and files for the ls command examples below.

]$ cd /etc

Run the ls command without any options.

]$ ls

This shows a listing of all directories and files (items) in the current directory, which is the etc directory. There are a lot of items and only the end of the listing appears. You can't see the top of the listing because it has scrolled off the screen.

So, we will use the | (vertical bar - above the Enter key on many keyboards) to "pipe" the output of the ls command to the less command - and then see some options of the ls command.

Linux Tips: To type the | (vertical bar) on most keyboards, hold down the shift key and press the (backslash) key.

Linux Tips: The less command is used to pause the output of a command after the first "screenful", so the output doesn't scroll off the screen. The less command is a Linux command, and not an option of the ls command.

]$ ls | less

Now, because you piped the output of the ls command to the less command, you can use the Up Arrow, Down Arrow and Page Up and Page Down keys to scroll through the output of the ls command.

Press the Down Arrow key a few times; then the Up Arrow key and then Page Up and Page Down. A nice way to view the files in the Linux file system!

Notice that just the item (directory and file) names appear. You don't see any other information, such as the size and date.

Press the letter "q" (without the quotes) to quit out of the less command. Do this after running each of the command examples below.

Now run the ls command with the -l (for long) option to get a "long" and more detailed listing of the items in the etc directory.

]$ ls -l | less

Now you get lots more info on each item! The size (in bytes) of the item appears at the left of the date. When a "d" appears at the far left of an item, this indicates that the item is a directory (folder).

Try scrolling down and then scrolling up.

The ls command below uses both the -l and -S options. The -S option causes the items to be sorted by size, with the largest item at the top.

Linux Tips: Linux commands are case sensitive, so when you see an upper case "S", be sure to type in a capital "S" (without the quotes).

]$ ls -lS | less

Press the Page Down key until you get to the bottom of the listing.

A Practical Linux ls Command Example - Listing Linux Text Configuration Files

Now let's say you need to look at some of the system configuration settings in a Linux text file. You know the file is in the current directory (etc) and that the file ends in ".conf", but you can't remember the full name of the file.

To see all possible file names, you use a Linux "pattern" of "*.conf" . This pattern uses the * (asterisk) wildcard character to show all files that end in ".conf".

]$ ls -l *.conf | less

Now you see the Linux text file you need and can check the settings in it.

Quit out of the less command.

The exit command is used to close a terminal emulation window and end a Linux bash shell "session".

]$ exit

Flash Tutorial: Flash Cool text animation

This lesson will show You how to create very practical text animation using some special flash tips and tricks.You don't have to use action script code to make this lesson. You can apply this animation for any text banner, text presentation...

Step 1 Start flash. Select Modify > Document (shortcut key: Ctrl+J ). Set the dimensions of your document as whatever you like. Select any color as background color and set your Flash movie's frame rate to 42 fps. Then, click ok. Step 2 Take the Text Tool (A) and type any text on stage. After that, while the text is still selected, press F8 key (Convert to Symbol) to convert this text into a Movie Clip Symbol. Step 3 Click on frame 5, 10 and 15 and press F6 key. Step 4 While you're still on frame 15, take the Free Transform Tool (Q) and enlarge the text a lot. Step 5 Then, take the Selection Tool (V) and click once on the text. Then, go to the Properties Panel (Ctrl+F3) below the stage. On the right, you will see the Color menu. Select Alpha in it and put it down to 0%. Step 6 Go back on frame 10. After that, go back on the Properties Panel (Ctrl+F3) below the stage and for Ease choose 100, and for Tween Motion. Step 7 Go back on the first frame and in the Properties Panel (Ctrl+F3) below the stage, for Tween choose Motion and for Rotate CW. See the picture below. Flash Tutorial: Hypnotic Gear Rotation

I'm not sure what inspired me to do this crazy gear rotating animation, but for some reason I just started making a simple gear in flash, then what does a gear do? well it rotates!.

So enough for the introduction, here you can see how to make a gear in flash, then animate it so it rotates, make a couple of copies and the result might seem a bit hypnotic as I think it did.

Start by making an oval on the stage as shown below, then make 4 more ovals, smaller and place them as shown below.

Select all the four small ovals, make a copy and rotate it so we now a 8 following around the big oval shape.

Now if you delete all the small ovals, your shape should look like below.

One last thing to do with the shape is to make on big hole in the middle using the same method as before.

Right click your new gear shape and convert it to a movie clip.

In the timeline make a new keyframe at frame 10, right click between frame 1 and 10, choose motion tween.

Go to the properties panel and change the rotation from auto (default) to CW (clock wise).

Once again right click your shape and convert it to a movie clip, (so we have an movie clip animation in a movie clip).

Make a copy of your gear, double click it and go to the properties, change the rotation from CW to CCW.

That last thing I did was make a lot of copies, placing them next to each other, testing and testing, so they rotate in oppisit direction to make it look right.

Flash Tutorial: Funy Flash Picture Animation

This tutorial will teach you how to create on a simple way, with no action script code very useful picture animation in flash which you can use for any picture presentation, animation, flash banner, flash site....Let's go!

Step 1

First of all, save my picture that we will use for this tutorial! ;)



Step 2

Create a new flash document. Press Ctrl+J key on the keyboard (Document Properties) and set the width of your document to 322 pixels and the height to 484 pixels (as the dimensions of picture). Select any color as background color.Set your Flash movie's frame rate to 35 and click ok. See the picture below.



Step 3

Choose File > Import > Import to Stage (Shortcut key: Ctrl+R) and import my picture into a flash stage.

Step 4

While the picture is still selected, go to the Align Panel (Ctrl+K) and do the following:

1. Make sure that the Align/Distribute to Stage button is turned on,
2. Click on the Align horizontal center button and
3. Click the Align vertical center button.



Now, we have aligned a picture with the background!

Step 5

While the picture is still selected, press F8 key (Convert to Symbol) to convert this picture into a Movie Clip Symbol.



Step 6

Press F6 key twenty times. See the picture below!



Step 7

Click aftre that on every second frame except last two frames and press delete key on the keyboard. See the picture below.



Step 8

Click after that on frame 25 and 30 and press F6 key.

Step 9

Go back on frame 25, take the Free Transform Tool (Q), press and hold down Shift key and enlarge the picture a lot. After that, take the Selection Tool (V) and click once on the picture. Then, go to the to the Properties Panel below the stage. On the right, you will see the Color menu. Select Alpha in it and put it down to 0%.



Step 10

Choose right-click anywhere on the gray area between the frame 20 and 25 and frame 25 and 30 on the timeline and choose Create Motion Tween from the menu that appears.See the picture below.



Step 11

Select frame 30 and press F6 key Then times. After that, repeat step 7. See the picture below.



Step 12

Click on frame 45 and 50 and press F6 key.

Step 13

Go back on frame 40. Then, in the Properties Panel below the stage for Tween choose Motion, for Ease 100 and for Rotate CW. See the picture below.



Repeat this process also for frame 45, but for time, for Ease set 100 and for Rotate CCW. See the picture below.



Test your Movie (Ctrl+Enter).

Flash Tutorial: Flash Photo soft easing effect

In this flash tutorial you will see how to apply a stylish soft easing effect to a photo of Cameron Dias. This effect is great for commercials ad banners or just a simple photo showcase.

First we need to import the image to stage and resize our stage to fit the image as I did below.

Now you need to right click your image and convert it to a movie clip, you dont need any specific instance name just convert it.

Go to the properties panel and go to filters add a blur effect as shown below.

Now we want to place our image on top of the stage so it rolls down as you can see in the example.

Go to the timeline and right click at frame 20, insert a new key frame, then drag the movie clip back in place on stage, right click between frame 1 and 20 on the timeline and create a motion tween.

That was the first step of 3, now we want the photo to be sharp, so right click at frame 40 and insert a new key frame, click the movie clip and go to the panel for filters and bring down the blur to 0 again.

Right click between frame 20 and 40 and create a motion tween.

The last step is real easy, just right click at frame 55 and insert a new key frame, this will make the Cameron Dias photo stay sharp from frame 40 to 55 then it will repeat it self.

First of all, download my picture that you have to use to make this lesson.



Step 2

Create a new flash document.

Step 3

Select Modify > Document (shortcut key: Ctrl+J ). Set the width of your document to 400 pixels and the height to 348 pixels. Select any color as background color and set your Flash movie's frame rate to 28 fps. Then, click ok.

Step 4

Choose File > Import > Import to Stage and Import my picture into a flash.

Step 5

While the picture is still selected, go to the Align Panel (Ctrl+K) and do the following:

1. Make sure that the Align/Distribute to Stage button is turned on,
2. Click on the Align horizontal center button and
3. Click the Align vertical center button.



Now you have aligned the picture with the background.

Step 6

Double click on layer 1 to rename its name in picture.

Step 7

After that, click on frame 25 and press F5 key.

Step 8

Create a new layer above the layer picture and name it animation.

Step 9

Select the animation layer and take the Rectangle Tool (R). In the Colors portion of the Tool panel, block the Stroke color by clicking on the little pencil icon and then on the small square with the red diagonal line. For Fill color choose black color and draw a “rectangle” on the position like it is shown on the picture below.



Step 10

While the rectangle tha you just created is still selected, press F8 key (Convert to Symbol) to convert this rectangle into a Movie Clip Symbol.



Step 11

Click on frame 10, 15 and 25 and of layer animation and press F6 key.

Step 12

Go back on frame 10. After that, take the Selection Tool (V) and click once on the rectangle to select it. Then, go to the Properties Panel (Ctrl+F3) below the stage. On the right, you will see the Color menu. Select Alpha in it and put it down to 75%.See the picture below.



Step 13

Click on frame 15 and repeat the previous step, but for this time, put the Alpha down to 55%. See the picture below.
